The Gypsy Café in Observatory, is Cape Town’s newest concept restaurant. Featuring an eclectic, ever-changing menu with international flare, you are able to travel around the world, without leaving the comfort of this intimate space.
Influenced by modern worldwide cuisine and the traditions of migrant cooking, The Gypsy Café offers an unconventional menu, with updated twists to traditional European, North African and Mediterranean cuisine. The idea is to be able to “travel the world”, Gypsy style, and experience different culinary delights from a pre-determined country. Giant world maps on the walls of the restaurant indicate which country is being visited by the Gypsies in that chosen month. You can be rest assured that the caravan will keep moving in true Gypsy style.
The interior of the restaurant has been designed according to Gypsy custom and reflects the spirit, life stories and emotions of these nomadic people. The restaurant is like an ethnic museum showcasing excellent food with objects, artefacts and antiques used everyday in the caravan houses of the Gypsies.
The traditional cuisine of the Gypsies reflects their itinerant way of life and included wild plants, fish and game that could be taken opportunistically. Their knowledge and understanding of wild foods was essential to their survival. Their cuisine reflects the country and culture they live in, and they adapt to the types of food that are readily available. The Gypsy Café brings artisanal cooking to your table for all social occasions, intimate dinners, cocktail parties and corporate functions. Featuring custom menus by chef and part owner Jaco Swanepoel, they create a spectacular culinary event within a welcoming and bohemian environment.
The attention to detail in the Gypsy Café is tantamount to the owners’ belief in the “X” factor. They believe that value for money, good food, excellent service and a sound concept are the reasons that people keep coming back.

"This place is as unpretentious as it gets - which is not to say that they don't put every effort into serving fantastic food and providing great service. I'll be going back again and again to try their different menus. I'm intrigued to try out some of their vegan dishes as well."
